Autumn Term 2025

KS3 Update: Exploring Structures and Woodwork Skills

This term in KS3, pupils have been learning about shell structures and how they are used in real-life applications to create strong yet lightweight designs. We discovered that boats often rely on shell structures to support weight and provide protection. To bring this concept to life, pupils created their own papier-mâché boats and tested their buoyancy in water. It was a fun and hands-on way to explore engineering principles.

In addition, pupils have been developing their woodworking skills, focusing on the halving joint, a fundamental technique used to securely join two pieces of timber. This project not only built practical skills but also deepened their understanding of structural strength in woodwork.

KS4 Update: Starting the BTEC in Construction

KS4 students have begun their BTEC Introductory Certificate in Construction, a practical, skills-based qualification designed to give learners a solid foundation in the construction industry. It’s perfect for those new to the subject and keen to explore various areas of construction while gaining essential life and work skills.

So far, students have been learning to safely operate construction machinery including the chop saw, band saw, and circular saw. They've also explored how different timber joints serve different structural purposes, an important step in understanding material properties and design choices in construction.
