Spring Term 2026

MSSR has work that is currently being exhibited in the Annual Schools Exhibition at the Burton Gallery, Bideford, the show runs until  15th March 2026.

KS4

KS4 students have been developing artwork centred on activist messages. Beginning with a cause they felt strongly about, each student selected a character to act as the “face” of their message. Photographs were digitally edited to create high‑contrast images of their chosen champion, which were then recreated using paint and a range of mixed media.

The final pieces present a powerful spectrum of activist themes, addressing issues including violence, homelessness, climate change, corruption, women’s car safety, equality, and racism.

KS3

KS3 students spent a half‑term exploring and creating patterns inspired by traditional designs from cultures around the world. Their work focused on developing rotational symmetry and repeating tessellated patterns. Beginning with a set of lines created at either a 45‑ or 90‑degree angle, students rotated their motifs through a full 360 degrees to construct their final design. These were then coloured using a range of media, copied, and repeated to create the enlarged tessellated pattern you see here. Some of the students were able to develop these further into designs for lino cuts and polytile prints.

Autumn Term 2025

Art – Natural Forms

KS3:
Last term, students focused on 2D work inspired by natural forms. They have been:

  • Observing details closely and learning how to add tone and shading to create depth.
  • Experimenting with a range of drawing techniques to improve accuracy and creativity.

KS4:
Students have explored the work of artists who could be considered activists. They have started creating their own posters, practising painting and drawing skills while also developing an understanding of how to achieve higher grades at GCSE.

Autumn Term

Key Stage 3

This term we started using emojis as our inspiration; the students created their own agamographs. This is a type of lenticular image – from one angle you can see one image from the other side a different image. We used opportunities to revise the formal elements of art – line, value, colour, form, shape, texture and pattern. The finished results are amazing the students should be very proud.

Since half term the boys have been encouraged to explore their own ideas and have been creating using a range of recycled materials. We have looked at artists and artwork that use all sorts of items to create really inspiring pieces. We have had fun making our versions of Romuald Hazoume heads and a wide range of self-generated artefacts.

Key Stage 4

Key stage 4 started the term by completing workshops with a range of challenges all incorporating a range of media materials that are usually thrown away. The use of recycled materials is very popular amongst today’s contemporary artists so there are a wide range of artists and artwork to help inspire us. This half term students are expected to create something using the skills and materials they used in the first half term. There are some very different and interesting pieces being made.
